About Us

Our Story

Chappell Assembly of God is one of the oldest Assembly of God churches in the state of Nebraska. In the spring of 1914, a meeting was held in the courthouse by Rev. John McConnell. During these meetings several families joined with him to start a church. Then in August of the same year, Rev. Joe Stevens came to Chappell from Texas and held a tent meeting on the main street of Chappell. He preached the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues. This teaching brought about much persecution; tent ropes were cut, rotten eggs were thrown, and others were dragged from the altar. But in spite of all of this the church was birthed.

Since then, the church has remained involved in the community with multiple church members being active on the school board, city council, teachers in the school system and business owners and leaders in the community. Along with supporting numerous Assembly of God Missionaries and other domestic and international missions programs, our church was very active throughout the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s participating in many missions trips to Mexico to help build churches and spread God’s Word. Our most recent missions’ trip took place in May 2013 when members from our church along with believers from Julesburg, CO went to Haiti to aid with the construction of a new orphanage.

Some of the other activities the church has practiced and continues to take part in are water baptisms (at the church, Lake McConaughy, and in a private pool), Missions Trips, Youth trips to see Christian concerts, family game nights, operating a Fireworks stand to raise missions funds, creation and delivering of welcome baskets, and monthly pot lucks.
Our beliefs are in line with the Assemblies of God movement. The Assemblies of God are a cooperative fellowship of churches in the Pentecostal tradition. We adhere to the 16 Fundamental Truths put forth by the Assemblies of God. For more information on these beliefs, follow the link under "Useful Info" (below) to the Assemblies of God page.

Our pastor is Kevin Jacobs, a Nebraska native from Omaha. Along with his wife, Beth, and three kids, they are excited to be a part of the Chappell community. Kevin and his family have ministered to youth in Omaha and Minneapolis and is embarking on his first lead pastorate at Chappell Assembly of God. Kevin is a self-proclaimed movie-buff, enjoys studying history, and loves the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Beth is the K-12 music teacher in Julesburg, CO, and enjoys DIY projects, crafting, and playing the piano.
